The War Against Counterfeit Medicine My Story is a unique study of a global phenomenon – in which lawbreaking and profiteering prevail at the cost of human health and life – and of the ways in which this can be fought by appropriate legislation, regulation and enforcement. The challenges in countering are enormous, not least since such illicit production of food and drugs is an immensely lucrative business. Prof.Akunyili cites statistics from the World Health Organization, noting that in 2003, the worldwide sale of counterfeit drugs accounted for US$32 billion, or 10 per cent of all drug sales.
Dora Akunyili’s achievements as Director General of NAFDAC are an inspiration to everyone, in every country, who is involved in countering the proliferation of fake food and drugs. Her experiences are a message of hope. They are testimony to the commitment and courage of individuals who serve the institutions, which work to ensure that commercial profitability goes hand in hand with the safety and wellbeing of consumers.
War Against Counterfeit Medicine My Story eBook Dora Akunyili
My mother has worked in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries for over 40 years and I remember her mentioning Dr. Akunyili to me many years ago after she was featured in Time Magazine. My mother has often mentioned counterfeit medication, but until I borrowed this book I really was not aware how big this black market industry is. I know that drug makers generate billions of dollars each year, but I was astounded to read how many individuals and organizations make amazing amounts of money by illegally manufacturing drugs.Every now and then the news (at least my local news) features some small story about a person who ends up in the hospital because they take medication that is contaminated or improperly made. The news doesn't tell you what happened to that person, where the medication came from, or what happened to manufacturer. The War Against Counterfeit Medicine: My Story explains what the media doesn't think (or want) to tell the public. Dr. Akunyili not only explains where these illegal medications come from, she also explores the dangers of taking these counterfeit medication and shows some of the damage that has been caused.
This book is not an easy read, but I think it is something that anyone who has ever purchased (or thought about purchasing) medication over the Internet should read. Unfortunately counterfeit medication does not only affect those of us who order our medications online, and honestly it is just plain scary. After reading this book I visited the FDA website to look for more information about counterfeit medications and was even more disturbed.

War Against Counterfeit Medicine My Story eBook Dora Akunyili Reviews
As soon as I read War Against Counterfeit Medicine My Story during a few days visit at my cousin's house, I felt eager to know more about the issue. I have never had a particular interest in medication, but we all use them from time to time, including me and my family. So, from total ignorance I finally started to comprehend some details about drugs, especially counterfeit ones. The more I used to learn, the more my anxiety grew.
In order to know whether the author is accredited enough, I have researched a little and I was amazed to see that she was quite popular in these circles. Actually, Dora Akunyili is on Wikipedia! Reading about all her awards and efforts to keep the pharmaceutical industry cleaner, I was already convinced that she was a reliable writer, who is truly concerned about this problem of our society (or should I say industry?). Also, many other respected sources of information confirmed her claims by publishing similar content, which was not descriptive enough, though.
War Against Counterfeit Medicine My Story had a huge impact on me shortly after I have read it. Being a mother myself, I was suddenly worried whether my son was treated right by his pediatrician. She is good and professional, but probably some of the medicines that she prescribes and I buy from the pharmacy are fake or not safe enough. The number of sales of counterfeit medicines seemed so enormous that I couldn't help thinking that we have already "tested" some without even realizing it.
However, I took a deep breath, because I believe that while there is still somebody, who cares and fights for people's health, the chance is present to eliminate this serious problem. And the book reassured me that measures can be taken, describing them accurately.
